Activating/Creating a NetID

Document ID 667

Introduction

Your NetID is your username needed to access many university resources such as Texas A&M University Email (Neo), the Howdy Portal, and Open Access Lab computers. Your NetID will be your username for your Texas A&M Email (Neo) addresses, which will have the format yourNetID@tamu.edu and  yourNetID@neo.tamu.edu

"Activating" your NetID is the same as creating your NetID. This means that prior to activating your NetID, you do not have a NetID.

Activating/Creating your NetID

The following information is needed to set up your NetID:

  • UIN: your Universal Identification Number (UIN)
  • Date of Birth: your Date of Birth (MM/DD/YYYY)

1. Open a web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and go to http://gateway.tamu.edu/.

Note: If you are logged in to an Open Access Lab computer using the Guest account, you may use the Guest Browser located in the Start menu.

2. Click Claim Your NetID [fig. 01].

3. Enter your Universal Identification Number (UIN) and Date of Birth (MM/DD/YYYY). Click LOGIN [fig. 02].

Note: If you receive the error message "The account is already activated" [fig. 03], then your NetID has already been activated. If you do not remember or do not know your NetID, please contact Help Desk Central at 979-845-8300 with your UIN. They can identify your NetID and help you reset your NetID password.

4. On the next screen, enter your NetID and click Submit.

Note: Read the information about the characters allowed for your NetID on the application screen. For your campus email address, Texas A&M Email (Neo) automatically defaults the NetID to lower case. Also, remember you will be giving this email address to family, friends, and potential employers. (We strongly suggest that you choose a name that will not cause you future awkwardness or embarrassment).

5. Finally, create a password. Enter it again to confirm your password, then click Submit.

Note: Read the information about acceptable passwords on the application screen. Your Password must be at least eight (8) and at most thirty-two (32) characters long. Your password must contain at least one (1) number or special character. Your password must contain at least one (1) uppercase and at least one (1) lowercase character. Your password must contain only the following characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, `~!#%^&*()-_=+[{]}\|:',<.>?/@$;

Your password will expire in one year. If you create a password with more than 16 characters, it will last for 4 years.
