Configuring and Using McAfee VirusScan on Windows Vista and Windows 7

Introduction

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Edition is a virus protection software provided free of charge to students through Texas A&M's Software Evaluation and Licensing Library (SELL). If you have not already ordered it through the SELL, you will need to go to http://software.tamu.edu/ to obtain a copy of the software. The following documentation will take you through some of the steps that will allow you to configure and customize McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Edition for your personal use.

This document is divided into the following sections:

  • Configuring McAfee VirusScan for automatic updates 
  • Using McAfee VirusScan to manually run a system scan
  • Scheduling automatic scans in McAfee VirusScan

Configuring McAfee VirusScan Entirprise Edition for Automatic Updates

By Default McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is already setup to automatically update every day at 5 pm. Use the following instructions to change the default automatic update time.

 

1. In the "Start" menu, under "Programs," choose McAfee then click VirusScan Console.

 

2. You will now be presented with the "VirusScan Console" page, double-click AutoUpdate [fig. 01].

3. You will now be presented with the "McAfee AutoUpdate Properties" page. Click Schedule... [fig. 02].

4. You will now be presented with the "Schedule Settings" page. Under the "Schedule" tab make any desired changes to the date and times in the update scheduler, then click OK [fig. 03].

5. Click OK to save your settings, then close the "VirusScan Console."

 

Using McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Edition to Manually Scan your System for a Virus

 

1. In the "Start" menu, under "Programs," choose McAfee then click VirusScan Console.

 

2. You will now be presented with the "VirusScan Console" page. Check the date in the "Last Run" column to the right of "AutoUpdate." If an AutoUpdate has not run within 24 hours of the current time, right click AutoUpdate and choose Start to update McAfee's virus database.

 

3. Double-click Full Scan [fig. 04].

4. You will now be presented with the "On-Demand Scan Properties" screen. By default your entire machine will be scanned. Make the necessary changes to these settings. To start the scan click Start [fig. 05].

5. You will now be presented with the "On-Demand Scan Progress" screen. Wait for the scan to complete [fig. 06].

Note: This step may take a few minutes.

6. During the scan process, if an infected file is found on your system, you will be prompted with the recommended action to take to remove the infection from your system. After the scan process is complete, a summary of the scan will be displayed showing the number of infected and clean files found on your system.

 

7. When prompted, click OK to complete the scan.

 

Scheduling Automatic Scans in McAfee VirusScan

 

1. In the "Start" menu, under "Programs," choose McAfee then click VirusScan Console.

 

2. You will now be presented with the "VirusScan Console" page. Double-click Full Scan, then click Schedule on the following screen.

 

3. You will now be presented with the "Schedule Settings" page. Click Enable [fig. 08].

4. Under the "Schedule" tab you can set the time and frequency for when McAfee VirusScan will run a full scan [fig. 09].

5. Click OK to close the "Schedule Settings" window, then click OK again to close the "On-Deman Scan Properties" page.
